Meetings with Ministers

"We have collaborated with the Alliance for the Reform of the Mining Law because we are the ones who have to apply the law. We realise how weak and ineffectual it is. As a public servant, it is very difficult to struggle against these powerful mining companies, and the law just protects them."
Aldo Santos, Special Prosecutor for the Environment

"As a woman, one has to work three times harder than any man just to gain basic respect. I would not dare to impose a fine on a company if I did not have rock solid technical proof to back up the allegations of environmental pollution."

Mayra Mejia, Minister of Natural Resources, responsible for the recent fine against Entre Mares of the equivalent of US$55,000 for environmental pollution.
